A Tarot Story

A Tarot Story
If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, you should water your grass.

You may or may not notice that this week’s column is a little late. It’s not for lack of trying, the creative well seems to have run a bit dry. The water line is below the reach of the bucket, anyway.

I’ve become keenly aware that I’m out of sync with the rhythm of the universe lately, and also that I’m neglecting the daily practices that help to keep me aligned. One of my most important touchstones is a daily tarot reading. I’ve barely managed a monthly tarot reading, but I have read for a couple of friends lately and that has helped to reconnect me with my most favorite ritual. So today I bring you a story created by the age-old predecessor to artificial intelligence: The Tarot (and interpreted by a real live human… me).

A Tarot Story

She wanted desperately to go. More importantly, she wanted to LET go. She wanted her freedom, but more importantly the feeling of freedom, whether or not she chose to embrace it. She wanted to be able to wander in the moonlight, lighting candles in the shadows and solitude. She wanted to be somewhere else, alone with her thoughts in a place of solitude.

Logistically, this seemed impossible. It meant breaking promises and walking away from responsibilities. It also meant finding the courage and strength to be true to herself. This decision was one that had to be made quickly, or the changes may not happen at all. Then, where would she be? Whether or not it made sense was a secondary consideration.

Everything she wanted was just on the other side of her fear. A newfound sense of clarity, alignment with her true purpose, the opportunity to engage every one of her skills and abilities and create her magnum opus. But a change like this is never easy and it was clear that the transition was going to be difficult, and probably painful, at first.  She was going to have to stay focused on her ultimate goal and follow the cycle of fortune and failure, as the wheel was always turning.

As she watched each cycle unfold, she realized that the only change needed, the only change she could even actually make, was within herself. Her first impulse to let go would mean letting go of everything, when the only aspect that needed to go was her belief that to change one thing, she had to change everything. She did not need to uproot her entire life to be true to herself, she only needed to return to herself. She was always right there. Everything she needed and wanted was right there.

It was still going to be difficult. It was always going to be difficult. Just not in the ways she initially believed. In some ways it’s easier to bloom where you’re planted. There’s no guarantee that a new garden is going to be any better. But wherever you are, what is important is that you bloom, maybe a little bolder with each new cycle.

The cards I drew for this reading story were:

Two of Wands
The Moon
The Chariot
Page of Swords
Eight of Wands
Strength
The Sun
Judgement
The Magician
Death
Three of Wands
Wheel of Fortune
Ten of Cups
Queen of Cups
Ten of Swords

I hope that this story, this reading, finds you wherever you are. Turn your face to the sun, and bloom.
