Making Space

I think it’s safe to say that no matter how you view the events unfolding around us at an undeniably rapid pace, taking it all in is akin to drinking from a fire hose, while facing a wall of spotlights.
If it feels like it is too much to process, that’s because it is. I’m not going to tell you that you should be practicing more self-care than you think you need (but you do so stretch, go for a walk, and get a glass of water, then come back and finish reading). Self-care is great, it’s necessary for our physical and mental health, but there’s something bigger we should be doing.
Nothing. We should be doing nothing. I don’t mean “nothing” in the way that we shouldn’t go to work, bathe the dog, pay the electric bill, or any other of the myriad things that keep our lives from falling apart. I mean, do enough ‘nothing’ to leave room for the universe to work its magic. This can only happen when we leave things alone.
Do what you must but let what can fall by the wayside. We can’t see our way through a dust storm. We can’t see the bottom of a muddy pool when the water’s been churned up. The dust and the water will settle and when they do, the way forward will become clear. It won’t remain clear, nothing ever stays the same, so make any necessary moves when you can, and stop when you can’t.
The cosmic pendulum is in a constant state of movement from one side to the other. It can only swing so far one way before it must return to the other. The space in the middle is important and necessary for our individual progress. It’s too muddy, too chaotic, at either end of the spectrum, so give it, and yourself, the space to settle.
As is true with a Foucault pendulum, the path of the pendulum appears to change throughout the day, but the perception of change is because the earth is rotating beneath it. The world keeps turning as the energy shift (shift of power) continues to swing back and forth.
Pay the electric bill. Drink your water. Hug your dog. Create the serendipity that’s gone missing in your world. What else would you be doing?
I’m still settling in myself and hope to bring you a story, or an interesting observation next week. It feels good to be back.
